Nepal Civil War

(1996-2006)


Nepal Civil War—(Feb. 13, 1996-2006): Maoist guerrillas seek to overthrow the Nepal monarchy though a rural uprising. This conflict has grown in intensity in recent months. Chinese aid to the rebels is alleged.

Since the beginning of the war on February 13, 1996, when the Communist Party of Nepal (Maoist ) began the war against the government. Approximatly 13,000 people died in the ensuing conflict. By early 2006, the government's control of the countryside was weak to nonexistant, while political turmoil in the capital aided the rebels. In May, 2006, a new government in Katmandu offered to negotiate with the rebels, and the Maoists agreed to begin talks.

The Nepal Civil war ended with a Comprehensive Peace Accord signed on November 21, 2006.
